The LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 video game features stunning environments, an excellent use of the spells in the books and movies, and adorably funny moments and references to the series. It is a definite must have for Harry Potter and video game fans! Â
The LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 video game takes you through the defining moments of the first four books and movies. Playing as LEGO pieces in a LEGO world, you can play as Harry, of course, and you blast blocks apart with magical spells and other tricks, which makes colored studs spew out. You have to collect the studs so that you can buy new characters and powers, and then get to other levels to find secret blocks, characters and students in danger.Â

Magical spells that you’ll use are Wingardium Leviosa, which is very helpful in lifting objects so that your partner can reach high studs, assemble items, and break apart other items for the studs they’re made of. Lumos is used to scare away attacking plants, and Riddikulus knocks back your worst fear. Using all of these spells is a lot of fun and finding out what comes next is one of the best things about the game, such as walking to Hagrid’s Hut and passing Cornish Pixies holding items just out of reach and treasure chests with locks that appear to be unbreakable. You learn how to master these things as you successfully continue gameplay. Â
Hogwarts is also very real and alive and a lot of fun to be in! Hogwarts looks like Hogwarts, featuring all of the secrets and twists and turns a Harry Potter fan would expect. Diagon Alley is alive and thriving, too, and there are more than 160 characters to unlock.

The LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 game does a fantastic job of keeping the four years on track, and also allows you to explore however you’d like. Gameplay always starts in the Leaky Cauldron and you can replay a level with the characters you’ve acquired, or go on to Diagon Alley to enter cheat codes and use studs to get new characters. You can also jump back in and head into Hogwarts and start following Nearly Headless Nick to the next mission.
The humor in the game is one of the things that hooked me the most, even from watching all of the preview trailers leading up to the game’s release. Highlights of some of the funniest moments include zapping a radio but accidentally releasing a bunch of skeletons that come out and dance, Moaning Myrtle doing a swimming routine, and the mandrakes are the best! Â

Final Thoughts:
LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is a must have for every Harry Potter fan. You’ll fall in love with the detail, the humor, the characters, the hundreds of hidden things to find and explore, and you’ll want to play it over and over again. The game stays true to canon and the movies and is an excellent LEGO game for Harry Potter. Definitely grab a copy – you won’t be disappointed!
