Review: LEGO Dimensions Harry Potter Team Pack

I spent the last few Sunday afternoons playing with the LEGO Harry Potter Dimensions Team Pack on my WiiU. Here's how it went:

The first step is assembling the Starter Pack goodies. The Starter Pack is required in order to play with any of the other Packs in the LEGO Dimensions series. The first thing I noticed on the Starter Pack box was the phrase "internet connection required," so I set my Wii-U for Wi-Fi, and then began unpacking. I built LEGO minifigures of Gandalf, Batman and Wyldstyle from The Lego Movie.

After 10 frustrating minutes of trying to wrestle Batman and Gandalf into their respective capes, I finally gave up and searched YouTube for a tutorial — quick shoutout to Folfox Channel for the help!) 

I was now ready to start playing the game. It begins with a video voiced by none other than Gary Oldman (aka Sirius Black). He plays an evil character called Lord Vortech who wants to bend time and space to merge all universes into one by finding 12 foundation elements such as kryptonite, the one ring, the ruby slippers, etc. Gandalf, Batman and Wyldstyle are the three main characters attempting to stop him as he searches the various adventure worlds for the elements. But how do they travel around? Why, a Gateway portal, of course.

It was a 28-step build for this Gateway. Isn’t she a beauty?

Once you start gallivanting around the various adventure worlds, you get to build minifigs of Harry and Voldemort and add them to the mix by placing them on the Gateway. This time I had no trouble putting Voldie into his cape. Isn’t he handsome?

Cool tidbit: Harry is voiced by Dan Radcliffe – albeit via audio clips from the Harry Potter films. Harry has the power to fly on his broom, cast magical spells such as Lumos and Wingardium Leviosa, and destroy silver LEGO bricks, while Voldemort can fly (sans broom), open doors with parseltongue (as can Harry, by the way), cast spells and use mind control. In the virtual wizarding world, you can visit Hogwarts, Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, where you can visit the LEGO Weasley twins in their shop. But the real fun of this game is that all the different minifigs can be used in any world. Admittedly, I had a great time making Harry drive the Batmobile through the Land of Oz.

The basic idea of the game is to destroy everything in sight in order to earn “studs” that you can later “spend.” You can also earn golden bricks by doing optional quests.

During the game, you also get to build the Hogwarts Express, Enchanted Car (aka the Weasleys’ Ford Anglia) and Batmobile, which each have their own powers. The Hogwarts Express has Sonar Smash and the Enchanted Car can fly, of course. You can also spend the “studs” you collect throughout the game to rebuild, or upgrade, the vehicles, giving them even more powers such as Soaring Steam (flying) for the Hogwarts Express, and Shark Sub (going underwater) and destroying gold LEGO bricks for the Enchanted Car, among other powers.

I’ll be playing this game for a long time to come. There are so many different worlds to explore and levels can be replayed to gain even more valuable studs (purple are worth more than blue, which are worth more than gold …). Studs and golden bricks can also be used to "rent" heroes with powers different from your minifigs for half a minute or so (just long enough to accomplish whatever task your own heroes can't do). You can also, of course, use real cash to purchase the physical minifigs that come in other Team Packs, Story Packs or Fun Packs, too, if you’d rather save your studs for upgrading vehicles.

Bell Media, WB Canada launch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them multi-media partnership

Bell Media announced today an extensive multi-faceted campaign in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures Canada in support of the upcoming film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the highly anticipated film from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter world. Bell Media's Brand Partnerships team have created an exclusive multi-platform and multi-network campaign running through to "Fantastic Friday," the day of the film's release on Nov. 18.

The campaign, which launched Oct. 11, includes ETALK's Fantastic Fan Competition in search of the film's biggest fan. The contest was promoted via a 30-second on-air spot across various Bell Media properties including: ETALK, YOUR MORNING, INNERSPACE, MUCH, and E!. Two semi-finalists from the competition will appear on ETALK for a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trivia showdown. The winner will have the opportunity to attend a special press event in Toronto, and enjoy a meet and greet with the cast.

In addition, ETALK's Devon Soltendieck will sit down with director David Yates, Eddie Redmayne, and other cast members in front of a live studio audience for a half-hour special produced in support of the campaign. ETALK PRESENTS: FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM premieres on "Fantastic Friday", Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. on CTV.

"Once again, our ongoing partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures Canada has enabled us to roll out an multi-faceted campaign with exclusive, customized content reaching Canadians across the country," said Laird White, Director, Brand Partnerships, Bell Media. Fantastic Beasts™: Cases From The Wizarding World game coming for Mobile Devices in November

Launching on November 17, 2016, a day before the theatrical release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ highly anticipated new film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the game will be available for download on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and Google Play for Android devices.

Developed by Mediatonic, in partnership with WB Games San Francisco, Fantastic Beasts: Cases From The Wizarding World enables players to delve into the wizarding world as new recruits for the Ministry of Magic, visiting familiar locations like the Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade while exploring all-new magical mysteries. Global chance to win flights & tickets to advance Lumos screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Rowling’s international non-profit children's organization announces today that movie lovers worldwide will have the chance to win a pair of tickets for the special advance screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage on November 12, 2016. The winners also will receive invitations to an exclusive reception with members of the film’s cast following the screening. 

Every $10 donation at www.crowdrise.com/fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them  will count as one entry to the global sweepstakes run through the online fundraising platform CrowdRise to raise money to reunite children and families in Haiti and increase understanding of the harm caused by orphanages.  Funds will also be used to support Lumos’ relief efforts in Haiti and help children and families in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.  Entrants are eligible from almost all countries around the world and flight costs up to $2,500 will be covered for eligible entrants anywhere in the world. Rowling in the United States and Canada.

With more than 2,000 tickets sold – the event is part of a comprehensive campaign We Are Lumos Worldwide, supporting programs to help 8 million institutionalized children across the globe return to families and raise awareness of the harm caused by orphanages.  Other events have included an interview with J.K. Rowling streamed live on Facebook, September 17th, which drew over 2 million viewers worldwide, a gala performance of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London’s Palace Theatre, on September 18th, and the sale of over 19,800 limited edition T-shirts featuring a quote from J.K. Rowling from her Very Good Lives Harvard commencement speech in 2008.

Thanks to the generosity of Warner Bros., Scholastic and Lumos’ 100% Pledge, all funds raised by the Carnegie Hall event will go directly to Lumos’ Families Not Orphanages Fund.  The Fund will help children in the countries where Lumos works to leave harmful orphanages and return to a family life.  No portion of any donation will go to administration, fundraising or overhead costs of the organization.

Over the past decade, Lumos has helped thousands of children who were abused and neglected in orphanages return to family life in Central and Eastern Europe, and more recently in Haiti.  Now in its second decade, Lumos is expanding its work in Latin America and the Caribbean, and other regions around the world with the aim to ensure that by 2050 no child are left in harmful orphanages and all children live in safe, loving families.
